Puppy Love!

Welcome to our first issue of The OC Dogumentary!

February marks the month of exchanging messages of love, giving us the perfect opportunity to celebrate the love we share for our furry four-legged friends.

Our featured fur ball this month (pictured above) is little Ziggy, a border collie/boxer mix adopted from The San Clemente – Dana Point Animal Shelter in December. Ziggy’s mom, Berlin, was saved from the Riverside Animal Shelter on her last day, part of The San Clemente Shelter’s Third Chance program. This program not only saved the life of Berlin but also her litter of 9 puppies, all adopted into loving homes.

9 puppies! Did you know a dog’s gestation period is only 60 days with litter sizes averaging 6 to 10 puppies? With 2 litters possible in a year, that means one dog alone can give birth to hundred of puppies in her lifetime.

In response to pet overpopulation February also marks Spay Day USA, a national campaign to promote spay/neuter as a simple, humane and effective way to end the tragedy of euthanizing homeless pets.

The Humane Society of the United States hopes to reach their goal of getting 35,000 pets spayed or neutered nationwide.

Some facts we should all know:

• Spaying or neutering your pet reduces your annual license fee by more than $50

• Spaying and neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives.

• Spaying and neutering can eliminate or reduce the incidence of a number of health problems that can be very difficult or expensive to treat.

• Spaying eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of breast cancer, particularly when your pet is spayed before her first estrous cycle.

• Neutering eliminates testicular cancer and decreases the incidence of prostate disease.

• 25% of dogs in animal shelters are purebred.

• Specific Dog Rescues represent almost every breed.

We can all do our part through education, ensuring our own pets are spayed or neutered, and adopting from animal shelters and rescues.

Quotes From The Dog Pile

"I think animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers."
-- Unknown

"No animal should ever jump up on the dining-room furniture unless absolutely certain that he can hold his own in the conversation."
-- Fran Lebowitz

"My husband and I are either going to buy a dog or have a child. We can't decide whether to ruin our carpets or ruin our lives."
-- Rita Rudner

Let's examine the dog mind: Every time you come home, he thinks it's amazing. He can't believe that you've accomplished this again. You walk in the door. The joy of it almost kills him. "He's back again! It's that guy! It's that guy!"
--Jerry Seinfeld

"Marley taught me about living each day with unbridled exuberance and joy, about seizing the moment and following your heart. He taught me to appreciate the simple things--a walk in the woods, a fresh snowfall, a nap in a shaft of winter sunlight."
--John Grogan, Marley & Me

"Life each year of your life like its worth seven."
--Erica Salmon

Thank you for helping us celebrate these wonderful creatures who warm our hearts and brighten our lives. Please feel free to forward this to anyone who might enjoy reading.
