Season's Greetings from The OC Dogumentary!
We hope this December issue finds you decking the halls :)
Once again we are proud to feature Operation Santa Paws this holiday season.
DURING THE HOLIDAY season extra help is needed for the thousands of abused and abandoned animals in the care of local animal shelters and rescues all over the world.
One local grassroots organization from Long Beach, Calif., "Operation Santa Paws," is helping by spearheading a canine/feline toy/treat drive to benefit less-fortunate pets this season. Justin Rudd, organizer of this annual holiday effort that started in 2001, is encouraging animal lovers to purchase a new dog or cat toy, treat or supply to drop-off/donate at one of the locations listed below that will be delivered in time for Christmas to shelters and rescues.

How to Photograph Your Dog
8 Picture-Perfect Techniques
By Michael Delgado, www.DogPhotography.org
We’d all love to take great photos of our dogs whenever we pull out our camera, but it can be really tough to get them to pose. And once they are in position, you need to make sure the lighting and camera is ready for the best shot possible before they start moving again.
As a professional dog photographer in Orange County, I want to share with you 8 ways to help you get the best picture of your pet:
1. Get Down on Their Level
If you want to get great pictures of your dog, you should definitely plan on getting a little dirty. You see, some of the great dog photos are taken when the photographer is laying on the ground (at the dog’s level). You want to be able to see the dog’s personality in his or hers’perspective, and that can provide some beautiful shots.
2. Use Natural Light
Whenever possible, use natural light to show the richness of your dog’s beautiful coat. Outdoor light during the afternoon (especially on a cloudy day) can really bring out the highlights of your dog’s fur.
3. Focus Right or Left
Plan on taking many photos of your dog when he or she is off-center. You see, you can really draw attention to the personality of your dog’s face when you compose your shot in a way that directs his or her’s face at the left or right of the frame. Try the different angles to see what picture looks the best.
4. Follow the Eyes
Make sure to keep your camera focused on the eyes of your pet. The eyes of your dog reveals the personality – and you want to capture that by making sure the focus is set there. You should also take pictures of any other part of your dog that makes him or her unique (e.g. a shaggy ear, drooping tongue, cute nose).
5. Location, Location, Location
To really capture your dog in the best moment, choose a location that shows off his personality. If you have an active dog that loves running around, perhaps take pictures on the beach, hiking trail, or backyard. If you’re dog enjoys laying round, try getting photos on a favorite couch, bed, or by a lit fireplace.
6. Use Flash Outside
Even though you’re shooting pictures of your dog outside, plan on leaving your camera’s flash on. Yes, leave your flash on. The flash can help bring light to any shadows and also bring out the color in your dog’s hair. You’ll be surprised at how well this works the next time you’re taking pictures outdoors. If your dog is frightened by a flash outdoors, don’t use it obviously.
7. Patience is a Virtue
It takes time to get good photos of your dog – and to capture him or her in the right moment. So plan on taking two or three hours to take pictures of your pet, and don’t get upset if you’re not getting any good photos right away. It takes time to get good photos, and don’t be afraid to take a lot of pictures. Besides, you’re only going to print the best pictures anyway. So shoot away.
8. Move Closer
One of the biggest mistakes people make is that they don’t get close enough to their pet. So go ahead, take another step forward and snap more pictures of your dog. The closer and more focused you can get, the better a picture can become.
